Released at the 5th of May by the British label 4AD, this is the second album by St. Vincent (A.K.A. Annie Clark). Produced John Congleton, the album is much like her past efforts a delicate blend of jazz and pop sensibilities framed by her quirky yet feminine vocals.

In times where anyone can be a film producer and musician without investing in expensive professional equipment – I’d even dare to say that even proper punk is overwhelmed and buried amongst all this hi-tech stuff– music of this quality should be considered a good find.

In a nutshell, the album is mother’s milk, good for all kinds of occasions and pleasant to all ears. The samples and electronic accompaniment are excellently arranged and help the album exist as a whole; dirty tones existing inconspicuously next to more beautiful ones. The first single released from it, Actor out of Work, was a instantly popular amongst her dedicated fans, whose number has grown steadily since the release of her first solo album Marry Me in 2007.

Actor out of Work, despite being the single is one of the albums less satisfying tracks. Black Rainbow, is– like the rest of the album – a great mix of progressive-jazzy-electronic-indie-happy-depressive beeps and honks enriched by her soulful, feminine vocals. This tone of melancholy tinged delight continues through the album; Laughing with a Mouth of Blood made me want to hug sweet clouds of love, while The Party inspires rumination, and beautiful colours to sway through the mind– an inspiring ballad by any standard.

Capable of going from quiet and melodies to noisy without getting boring, corny or too heavy, Annie Clark, though certainly not the first female singer to mine this territory (Solex comes to mind) is perhaps its most vital modern incarnation. As far as accessible indie rock goes, Actor, a pan-global mishmash of Björk, Laura Nyro and Saint Etienne all playing dress up in Kate Bush's closet, is a charming victory for all parties involved.
